NUMONDAY - is it a good marketplace for selling handmade products?

Editor’s Note

Thinking of selling on NuMonday?
You’re not the only one, this review still gets regular visits (and comments) from product sellers doing their homework. If that’s you, welcome.

While this isn’t a glowing endorsement of NuMonday, it is a brutally honest one. And that’s exactly why it’s stayed live.

Handmade selling platform NuMonday review 2021

NuMonday describe themselves as THE HOME OF BRITISH MAKERS

This review of NuMonday was written in 2018 when the platform was relatively new, however experiences seem to have remined the same since they started..
This review will walk you through Tracey's personal experience of setting up her handmade jewellery shop.

2025 Admin Update:

This review still stands sadly,  based on everything we hear about NuMonday which suggests that things haven't changed since this review was first written.

If you do know of something that has changed, please drop a comment below and we will update the review accordingly.

"I've been tasked with trialing out about the various selling platforms available for us handcrafters, makers, designers and artists, and sharing my experiences with you.

I already sell on Etsy which is probably the most recognised platform, so it is a great chance to try a few others."

NuMonday is a relatively new platform (founded in 2016 but only really just starting to make a name (July 2018)) although it's getting busier, but it still feels a bit like being a guinea pig -  eBay and Etsy were once at this stage though and they turned out ok so I'm giving it a chance!

NuMonday is run by one guy called Michael Wight and it's him that deals with all queries - he must be a busy bloke!

So, let's make a start

First step is signing up; you add your card details for payment, add your shop name, shop info and seller info, then click 'apply to be a vendor.'

Oooh I thought, this may take a while to be checked and accepted....nope!

You are just taken to the next page where it says 'Congratulations you are now a vendor'...well that was easy!

I assume that means they don't actually check out those who apply to be a vendor then, hmmm!

You do get an email saying your first monthly £5* payment has been taken - right, better get this shop sorted quickly then!

[*PRICING UPDATES

January 2020 update the fee was £10 month or £50 for 6 months or £90 for 12 months

May 2025: Numonday is now offering a 'Choose what you pay — from £1 to £20/month — and keep 100% of what you earn.' package.  According to their sign up details 'Most sellers choose between £5 and £10, but it’s totally up to you. Your support helps us stay seller-owned and commission-free for everyone.'

 Editor’s Note (May 2025)
While the “pay what you can” model might sound generous, it often signals that a platform doesn’t have a secure or consistent revenue stream.

And when that’s the case, seller support and promotional effort are usually minimal.

Without a strong business model behind it, there’s little incentive, or budget, for driving traffic or improving the seller experience.

Next step is Settings to add your Payment/Branding and Shipping details.

Payment takes you through to open a Stripe account (they have just moved over from PayPal to Stripe ) for payment to and from NuMonday - just one page of info to add, easy so far. They say they use stripe for sellers 'due to their lower fees which match our ethos of giving you the sales you deserve.'

Then Branding, just uploading your store banner and shop icon (simple if you already have an Etsy store, just use your existing pics, may need a bit of tweaking as your shop icon covers a bit of the bottom of your banner.)

Shipping is easy, one price for U.K orders, one price for international and you can offer free shipping if you want too.

Right, better get some products on

If you scroll down to the bottom there's a link that gives you info about NuMondays Etsy import service, they import your products from Etsy for you...Yay!   But they only import the first image.... Arghhhhh!  I've got 211 products now, that's going to take weeks to find all the pics and upload them.

I must admit this was nearly a deal breaker.

I was so excited that my products would be imported I was gutted to find out that I still had a hell of a lot of work to do finding and uploading pics, BUT it's still easier than doing it from scratch so shouldn't complain (much).

To start the import process you just need to go to Etsy and download your CSV file (Settings-Options- Download Data) and email this to NuMonday, they import your products, you just need to add the products to a category, add any variations, add additional photos and publish the products.

Current time for your import to be done is 48 hours as they are busy allegedly due to an influx of Etsy sellers defecting because of the price rises!

**Update** The Etsy import service is no longer free, as of the 18th July 2018 the prices are :-

1-10 items £2

11-50 items 20p per item

51 – 150 items £10

151 – 300 items £15

301 – 450 items £20

451 – 700 items £25

I'd say it was well worth the cost for the amount of time saved.

So far so good, it's pretty easy to do, everything is laid out nicely and clearly and there is a Facebook group (NuMonday Nation) this seems to be more of a place for people to try to sell their latest products, but I have had very prompt replies from Michael (NuMondays founder) to any queries on there so it seems to work.

One of my questions was regarding somewhere to put my privacy policy, according to them their policy covers me but this will be something for me to look into.

That's it for now, I'll share the next installment when my products have been uploaded.

Less than 24 hours later...

Less than 24 hours after submitting my Etsy import, I have my email telling me that my products have been imported from Etsy so I’d better get to work.

According to the email all I need to do is:

1. Add Shipping
2. Add Items to category
3. Add any variations to variable items
4. Add additional images
5. Publish your items

First thing I notice is that some of the imported photos don’t look great as they are displayed differently to Etsy.

Where Etsy show a cropped version of your pic as a feature pic, NuMonday show it all meaning my rectangular centred cropped bracelet pic is now a slightly lost looking bracelet at the very top of a portrait image.

Unfortunately there currently is no way of editing this on the site, which means the one photo that does get imported isn’t much use unless it’s originally square. If your photos on Etsy are square then you are laughing, if not be prepared for some serious cropping time in your future if you plan to sell with NuMonday.

It is so slow...

The website seems to be running very slowly sometimes while working on adding products, which is frustrating.  However there are a lot of fixes being done by Michael (the owner of NuMonday) so this can sometimes interrupt your listing…it’s annoying but it’s all work to improve the site so a necessary evil!

A big issue for me is the inability to be able to move your products around in your NuMonday shop. They seem to be placed in order of uploading at the moment but they do move around a bit so not sure if this is the case!

I’m told this is on the list of things that will be changed in future. (This is as of July 2018)

I now have ten products listed but must admit to having a bit of a skive to watch the tv! So if I had focused I could have more, but it is so slow!

I have also been busy opening a Twitter account for my Bright Shiny Objects business, mainly to trial the retweeting element of NuMonday. If you tweet your products using the NuMonday hashtags then Numonday will retweet them for you. It remains to be seen if the only people who will see the tweets are other NuMonday sellers. As I type the account has just over 3500 followers.

Ok, my thoughts so far

I’m impressed with the work Michael is putting in to grow the platform. He’s very responsive to ideas from sellers, adding categories when asked and replying to queries promptly. He says the marketing budget will now be weighed in favour of attracting buyers rather than sellers so time will tell if this pays off. The negatives I have mentioned are niggles more than major concerns so as things stand I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress.

Next step for me is adding more of my products! I’ll report back soon,

It’s now been three weeks since I opened my NuMonday shop so I expect you’re all dying to hear what has been going on, well, I’ll tell you.

Nothing. Nada. A big fat Zero.

Why?

No sales. But I do know that’s to be expected. After all, it is a brand new shop on a relatively new platform, so it isn’t going to attract buyers without putting the graft in to get buyers to the site and specifically your own store.

But surely I will have had some visitors and people browsing my shop?

Trouble is at the moment there is no way of seeing any stats for your store. So you don’t know which tags are attracting visitors, what they are looking at or if they click on anything. It’s a disheartening and frustrating.

This is a feature that is on the list of things that will be added in future, which is something but it doesn’t help now. You still need to bear in mind that this is a new venture, you have come in on it at the beginning and so it’s a work in progress.

Currently my jewellery is selling well on Etsy which is a very well established and Handmade Selling Platform. so I would rather direct any people on social media to there instead of an unknown platform – and that’s where the problem lies.

It’s Catch 22.

NuMonday shop owners need to promote their shop to get visitors to there and make it known, but as it’s unknown they are better spending their time on existing better known platforms, as I am.

The lack of information about how good/bad my store is doing, doesn’t help sway me otherwise.

So – what I am going to do?

I’m going to continue with my shop until the end of the month and see what happens without any promotion or traffic driving on my part.

Hopefully there will be more advertising and promotional work done by NuMonday and stats will be added so shops can see how successful their tags/titles etc are and enable them to change things about.

yes, this is the conclusion!

Well, firstly I must say that I am impressed with the way that Michael is working on the site, he must be constantly answering questions, responding to requests to add new categories and helping people set up their shops.

But in spite of this I’m going to be closing my shop, there are a few reasons for this (and this is just my opinion and experience)

I think the site is too new to spend a lot of time promoting my products. I prefer to spend my time directing people to an already known site (Etsy) or promote my own website.

I don’t like that they only use Stripe not PayPal, not only is Stripe relatively unknown in the UK, it also takes 5 days to receive payment for any orders, not ideal.

It’s too confusing to promote both my Etsy and NuMonday on social media so naturally I would stick to the one that is proven to bring sales in.

At the moment there are no NuMonday shop statistics available so you have no idea if anyone is looking at your products.

The £5 a month* cost is fair, but at the moment I just don’t think it’s worth it for the work you have to put in promoting your products. For example I can spend $5 on promoted listings on Etsy and sell $50 of jewellery as a result, at this time I would rather be doing that. Perhaps a beta test may have been a better way to go , free membership and even bonuses for those promoting the site and getting visitors to it?

In conclusion it could be a good platform in future when it’s known and trusted but at the moment it feels like this is a long way off and the sellers are doing most of the promotion, I’d rather be directing people to my own website where there’s no competition.

Let me know your thoughts!
