Why Great Products Struggle Online

Every day, great products struggle online.

As an Ecommerce Consultant, I see it all the time. A brand has products people love, the kind that should sell consistently.

Yet sales fall short.

Meanwhile, competitors with "ok"  seem to be flying off the shelves. It's frustrating.

It's not because the products aren’t good enough. Or because customers don’t want them.

The problem is the way they’re presented, positioned and sold doesn’t give them the best chance.

The trouble is ecommerce buyers doesn’t reward “good” products with sales.

They respond, and reward, easy discovery or engaging attraction and the finer details of frictionless pages, effortless decisions and believable proof.

It's being easy to find or discover.

A product page that tells a story that sells.

A shop that makes buying feel simple.

A customer experience that builds trust so people come back.

And this is where many independent brands run into trouble...

  • A product page isn’t just a place to upload images and specs. It’s a selling tool. If it doesn’t persuade, customers keep scrolling.
  • The checkout isn’t just a form. It’s a moment of decision. Every extra click, every missing reassurance, increases the chance of abandonment.
  • An email isn’t just admin. They are opportunities to reassure, to re-sell, and to build loyalty.

The gaps are rarely huge. They’re often subtle. Hidden away in the details. But they quietly drain profit, one missed sale at a time.

The problem is most founders or their teams are too close to their own brand to spot them.

The challenge isn’t effort - it’s perspective.

When you’re close to a brand, to the products, you miss what customers see instantly, small points of confusion, hesitation, or doubt that quietly stall sales.

That’s why strong ecommerce growth doesn’t start with more traffic.
More visitors only magnify what’s not working.

Send 1,000 new visitors into a leaky sales process and you’ll potentially lose 1,000 more opportunities.

Ecommerce is crafted, engineered - it doesn't happen by luck.

Great products need great sales systems and processes, without them, even the most innovative brands will struggle

Businesses that grow aren’t the ones who shout the loudest. They’re the ones who measure, adjust, and refine relentlessly.

They pay attention to every cause of friction wherever it hides. They turn every click, every checkout, every delivery into proof that the customer made the right choice.

The margin between “struggling” and “scaling” isn’t listing a new product or jumping on a new platform or throwing more money at ads.

Change starts in the details – the clarity of messaging, the trust throughout checkout, the timing of emails and the story a returning customer tells their friend...

The best selling ecommerce brands are rarely the ones with the best products.
They’re the ones who sell best, because they treat online selling as a craft, often with the help of an Ecommerce Consultant.

If great products sold themselves, ecommerce would be easy.

They don’t. Which is why the brands who master the details first, and then amplify traffic, are the ones that fly high.

The Difference Between a Shop Going Places and a Shop Standing Still

In ecommerce, the gap between growth and struggle is rarely about the product itself.

Two brands can sell almost the same item at almost the same price point, yet one keeps climbing while the other flatlines. The one that does well rarely has anything to do with price.

The difference is how a business shows up - it's all about the Presence, Persuasion and Performance.
These are the three areas I pay closest attention to as an independent ecommerce consultant - I call them the Ecommerce Gears Model.

When they turn together, sales grow. If one is weak, the whole system stalls.

Ecommerce brands that are going places treat ecommerce as a joined up sales machine that needs to run smoothly and efficiently.

Where visibility isn’t about chasing reach, but about relevance - being seen in the right spaces, at the right moments, with the right signals of authority.

Where the real work is in the subtleties - the way an offer is framed, the nudges of reassurance, the ease with which a decision can be made.

Where growth is the compound effect of margins, conversions, retention, and customer value - the key numbers that reveal whether turnover is profit or vanity.

Retail Economics reported that while overall online sales rose in 2024, the growth came from brands focusing on loyalty and basket value, not just chasing new clicks.

John Lewis, Tesco, Sainsbury's and M&S have all said publicly that their ecommerce push is now about loyalty, order value and customer experience. Smaller independent brands who employ the same principles - even without the big budgets - also see the benefits.

ONS data tells the same story.
Online sales have held steady at around 26% of total retail for over a year. Growth isn’t coming from a sudden flood of new shoppers. It’s coming from making more of the people already there.

Growth isn’t luck.
Ecommerce growth is crafted. It's engineered.

The brands that scale are the ones continually monitoring and refining their presence, persuasion and performance and building growth into the way they operate.

That’s exactly where I, as an ecommerce consultant, add value. My role isn’t to throw more tactics at the wall. It’s to help you engineer growth deliberately - tightening the system, fixing the leaks, and putting the right priorities in place.

Growth comes from seeing the whole picture, not just the channel in front of you.

What an Ecommerce Consultant Does

An ecommerce consultant isn’t an extra pair of hands to run campaigns or design product detail pages.

It's not an agency trying to sell you the same playbook they give to every other client or getting you to invest more in ad spend.

It’s the whole commercial picture.

As an independent ecommerce consultant, my job is to uncover where Presence, Persuasion and Performance are failing and turn those weak spots into engines of growth.

Ecommerce Sales Engine Model

That means looking everywhere the money is made or lost.

How people find you. How your site persuades them. How your promises hold up in delivery and service. And how the numbers stack behind it all from margins, acquisition costs, order values to lifetime value.

None of these stand alone. Miss one, and the others underperform. Align them, and the whole machine compounds. That’s what an ecommerce consultant does.  It’s what I do, for you - whether you want an in-depth consultancy project, a focused ecommerce audit, or ongoing support through coaching. Each has a different depth, but the goal is the same: to turn presence, persuasion and performance into profit.

Ecommerce growth isn’t magic. It’s engineered.
And whether that’s consultancy, audit or coaching, my job is to engineer it with you.

As your Ecommerce Consultant I will*:

  • Show you what you can’t see. The leaks in your sales process. The friction your customers feel. The silent sales killers that drain profit one abandoned basket at a time
  • Call out your numbers. Turnover that looks great but delivers nothing. Ads that burn cash. Metrics that sound impressive but are masking lost opportunities
  • Buy from you like a customer. Feel every hesitation, every doubt, every point where you lose me. Then tell you exactly why it cost you the sale
  • Put you side-by-side with your competitors. Where they steal attention. Where you have the edge. Where you’re invisible – and what to do about it
  • Cut the noise. Stop chasing tactics that look busy but don’t pay. Focus only on the moves that compound: higher order values, better retention, more lifetime profit
  • Turn insight into action. Not “strategy” for its own sake. A clear growth plan that makes your presence bigger, your persuasion stronger, and your performance grow

* the actual work depends on how we work together

What that really means for your ecommerce business

Every leak fixed is money back in your pocket. Every hesitation removed is a customer who finishes checkout. Every blind spot exposed is growth you can finally capture instead of handing to your competitors.

During the call we'll talk about what your business needs and discuss the best option for you.

Ecommerce Consultant vs Audit vs Coaching

Every brand says it wants growth. The real challenge is choosing the right way to get it.

  • Ecommerce Consultant is full immersion. I don’t just look at dashboards — I walk your customer’s path. I buy your product. I feel the friction. I talk to your team. I go behind the curtain, and if needed, I’ll walk the floor with you. Then I come back with findings, test them with you, and deliver a roadmap that shows exactly how to fix leaks, lift profit, and scale. If you want transformation, this is where it happens.
  • Ecommerce Audit is the sharp focus. I dig through your data, test your site, stress-check your messaging, and pull apart the customer journey, using every tool and login you’ll give me. You get a full written diagnosis and recommendations you can act on now. Just the truth of what the numbers and the experience say.
  • Ecommerce Coaching is momentum. Growth doesn’t come from one big change, it comes from decisions made week after week, month after month. Coaching is where you bring the questions, the challenges, the ideas, and I give you the guidance, perspective and push to keep improving.

It really depends how you want to work:

ECOMMERCE CONSULTANT
when you want an expert inside your business, embedded, testing, questioning, uncovering what others miss.

ECOMMERCE AUDIT:
when you want fresh eyes on your business - a rigorous external review that shows you what the data and customer journey really say.

ECOMMERCE COACHING:
when you want a guide by your side - step-by-step support to keep you moving, deciding, and growing.

During the call we'll talk about what your business needs and discuss the best option for you.

How soon can we start?

As soon as we can find a mutual space in our diaries.

How much does this cost?

Ecommerce Growth Partner is £3000 -  for the whole 12 months.

A one time payment (or investment) to get 12 months of support - so you can focus on your business growth without worrying about anything else.

What if we need to pause or reschedule?

There is a 14-month window to complete sessions which gives you flexibility for holidays or unexpected delays. We'll reschedule as needed.

If something happens which means you need a longer pause, let me know and we'll figure it out.

How long and how frequently are the sessions?

Your 12 sessions will be aprox. 60 minutes.

Occasionally we may go over, if required.  Occasionally we may also finish 5 minutes early, if we've covered everything needed.

These sessions are designed to work monthly, to last 12 months.
However sometimes the gaps may be shorter or longer depending on business and personal commitments.

Unless otherwise agreed, the sessions are designed to be completed in a 14 month window. Though it's potentially possible (depending on diary time) to complete the 12 sessions in 6 or 9 months.

Who does the work?

You do. This is a mentoring and strategy programme, designed to guide and support you.  It isn't a done‑for‑you service.

I help you map, plan, and execute.  When i can teach you how to do something I will - but you will put the plans into action.

What platforms do you work with?

Whether you use Shopify, Woocommerce or another platform I can help.  I've worked with most.

For Email marketing I can also work with multiple platforms from Klaviyo, Kit, Mailerlite, Mailchimp.

And if I haven't used your platform before - I'm a fast learner!

What if I have specific things to work on, e.g. Email Marketing

We have 12 months, so we have time to work on many things.

If you want to kick off with Email Marketing, we should be able to make that happen - unless during our discovery call I find something more urgent, which we will discuss.

What if I have a partner or team member I want on calls?

No problem, bring them along.  I'll be guided by your needs and preferences.

Does it matter how long I've been in business or how big my business is?

No.

Whatever stage you're at, from start up to scaling up from 6 or 7 figures, I can help.
