Nicola Smith A Handcrafted Business Craft A Business You Love 2

When I talk to people about PROFITABLE product pricing …

First of all I see doubt. Then it becomes ‘ahh I should be doing this.’

Which then turns into excitement and optimism for the potential of their business.

But then I see the fear grow behind their eyes.

If you didn’t know better you could be mistaken for thinking I’d asked them to jump out of a plane without a parachute. But it's the fear that if they price profitably then they won’t sell anything.

Because selling higher priced products is perceived to be harder than selling cheap products.

Let me dispel that myth, once and for all.

It isn’t any harder.

It may be different but that doesn’t make it harder.

How to sell profitably priced products

First you need to make sure you have a quality product that stands out from the crowd.
You probably have this already. It’s a no brainer.

Pricing profitably isn’t about selling a cheap product for more than it’s worth. It’s about selling a quality product for a fair price for you and your customer. And a fair price is profitable.

The trick is knowing what makes your product valuable to your customer.

Is it how the product functions? Is it how it looks? Is it the size? The presentation? The speed of service? The personalisation? The sustainability? The ethical materials you use? The fact that it is one of a kind? The cause or charity that buying this product will help?

Price is a factor for customers, but you are looking for customers who are looking at more than just price alone.

Then you need to communicate this value. Because sadly, your customers aren’t mind readers.

If the value is because of the materials you choose - tell and show them why you chose those materials and why you don’t use cheaper materials. Talk about why this is important to you.

If the value is because of your making process - explain and show that too. Slow mo videos or from this to this reels are great for this.

If it’s because of your exceptional customer service, you got it. Tell them. Talk about how you’ve wow’d your customers and back it up with your 5 star customer reviews.

And whatever it is, don’t just tell them once. Use images, storytelling, facts, video, share news articles, discuss issues, above all demonstrate your passion, your knowledge and your worth. If you don’t show them why you are worth it, no-one else will.
(But someone else will be showing them why their products are worth it!)

Having the information hidden away on your about page won’t cut it - though having everything laid out clearly and ready for someone to find there is important.

Find your voice. Your thing that connects you, your business and your customers - and talk about it. A lot.

Oh and if you can take everything a step further and use other people’s platforms to talk to their audiences  about all of this even better - podcasts, YouTube channels, FB groups. And then there is getting mentioned in the press. And then find influencers who share your concerns/issues/passion to work with too.

You need to be talking about what makes your products stand out from the crowd in your marketing and your product listings as well.
Over and over again.

Buyers need constant reassurance and reminders.

Then you also need to make sure that your photos are exceptional.

Because poor photos won’t show off your great products.

If you’re selling a dream, have aspirational photos.

If you’re selling a practical product, show them the product in use.

If your quality factor is all about the attention to detail, then show off the details.

All these factors make an impression and the impression you are aiming for is high end.

Everything you put out should scream quality - whatever that means to you and your customer.

Next you need to provide your buyers with a great customer experience by providing supportive and helpful customer service.
Again they only know about this if you tell them.

You also need to reassure your customers using returns policies, guarantees and delivery information which is clear, upfront and better than average where possible.

And finally give your buyers a reason to buy right now.

When you have profitable pricing you can afford to play around with your offers to make them more appealing and urgent.

Oh and if the item is a one off, then make sure you are selling the scarcity too.

We’ve barely scratched the surface.

But ultimately you need to appeal to buyers who value a better product.
